Car Safari and Discovery Cave Adventure

Saturday we decided that we wanted to get out of the house and not feel sorry for ourselves about losing a family pet. We had been talking about heading down south to Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch all week, we just weren't sure that the timing was right. On short notice, we packed up the girls and headed out. We had a great time! Abigail thought it was so fun to sit in the front seat with daddy and feed the animals out her window. Emery does not like being hot so she complained every time Spencer spotted an animal on her side of the car and rolled down her window. She found the whole adventure unimpressive and ended up sleeping most of the drive. She even missed a giant ostrich sticking its head in Abigail's window and trying to eat our door locks. All Abigail could say while backing away from the ostrich was, "Oh god, Oh god." There was a petting zoo at the end with several very fat, and obviously overfed goats in it. In fact I thought one of them was pregnant until I caught a glimpse of his 'male-ness.' It was amusing that none of the goats were interested in the food we bought, but instead wanted the paper bag that it came in.

Next door to the Ranch is Natural Bridge Cavern. Abigail has such a great sense of adventure we decided to check out the cave. Once we got down in the cave, Abigail was so thrilled that she acted like our tour guide the whole way through. She would listen to what the guides had to say and then repeat the info to us, as if we hadn't heard it the first time. After listening to the guide, she informed us matter-of-factly that when water drips on you from the ceiling it was called a 'cave kiss.' It was very sweet. Emery rode on my back and was pretty enthusiastic about the cave herself. She leaned her head back and took in the scenery. At least until nap number two! I loved the cave (even with the 99% humidity). Spencer and I thought it was one of the better caves we had been to, and we really enjoyed the self-guided tour. I was a little concerned after they warned us that touching any of the cave formations was a third-degree felony, but they were kind enough to have a 'touching rock' at the beginning of the tour so Abigail could get that urge out of her system. If it weren't so hot there was a rock climbing wall, a zip line and several other things to do outside. None of them looked very fun when you are standing in 100 degree Texas heat. Perhaps next time!
